Business Boot Camp

Learn how to keep your systems in-line with your business.

Modeling business process strategies and analyzing detailed business requirements are the enabling drills for the future. Together they provide the foundation for developing application systems that effectively support the business. However, the path to understanding and modeling the business is filled with obstacles. Our boot camps are led by experts who have been there, and provide hands-on exercises for those following behind. Each class promises to guide the business specialist, business analyst, IT professional, and project managers on a path that aligns business with IT. By working as a team they can understand, model, improve and automate the business. After you complete these courses you will be on the right path.

Business Process Modeling (using ProVision Workbench) - Three Days

Course Overview
Business Process Modeling (or BPM) is a model-driven approach for replacing obsolete, cross-functional business processes to gain maximum effectiveness. The concepts of BPM are implemented in ProVision Workbench, a visual modeling and repository software tool that captures and maintains redesigned business processes. This course establishes a practical and reusable approach for performing Business Process Modeling projects, and planning the application system and organizational changes that result.

Strategic Modeling
BPM projects begin by exploring the business environment and setting strategic direction. This view of the business examines major organizations and their roles, such as customers, suppliers, competition and internal departmental structures. The interactions between these “players” (including resources, products, services and feedback) are investigated to identify optimization opportunities. Strategic business direction is then set by considering all of these factors. The business strategy provides guidance for reengineering or improving business processes, and gives direction for ongoing management of the business.

Business Process Modeling
A business process is a series of activities within the organization that produces a product, service or business deliverable of value. Business processes are identified within the context of the business strategy. Processes are modeled using a Workflow Model to reflect component activities, the organization or job performing the activities, and the flow of work between activities.

Business Process Redesign
Once processes are identified they may be redesigned. This course offers two approaches to process redesign. The first is a radical approach where the process is redefined from a conceptual (clean-sheet-of-paper) view. This removes preconceptions that carry over from previous practices. The second approach identifies opportunities for incremental improvement in existing processes. This allows for a smoother evolution of current practices.

Enterprise Application Modeling (using ProVision Workbench) - Five Days

Course Overview
Many organizations today are realizing the importance of understanding and documenting the fundamental business rules of a business area prior to beginning the system design process. This course lays the groundwork for understanding the significance of business requirements analysis. It overviews a proven approach along with the modeling concepts and project deliverables used to identify and document business requirements. It is complemented by our visual modeling software tool, ProVision Workbench. Our accelerated approach to requirements analysis has been proven on hundreds of projects in dozens of industries.

Business Domain Profile
Regardless of the techniques used to model a business area, its boundaries must first be established. Without a clear definition of boundaries, analysis teams invariably get off track. They have no agreement on which subjects to talk about and which to defer, so they talk about everything. They have no reliable way to assess what remains to be done, so they can't schedule reliably. Worst of all, they have no way to determine when they're done, so they often just keep on talking!

Business Structure
The structure of your business can be defined as a set of business objects. A business object is simply a thing of interest to the business. In business object analysis, we build models that describe the types of objects that a business deals with. To discover these, we look for objects that the business records facts about, objects that the business acts on (manipulates in some way), and objects that carry out some function for the business.

Business Dynamics
Business dynamics concentrate on the activities performed by the business in response to initiating events. An event is simply a significant occurrence which obligates a business domain to take action. For each event, the business performs a set of activities in response, and produces the resulting deliverables.

Requirements Analysis Project
Once you understand the nature and purpose of business models, you can begin to understand how experienced practitioners go about developing them. By studying real-life examples, you can see how each step in the analysis process produces information used in subsequent steps. And you can envision what a complete business requirements deliverable should contain.
